Local Anti-Smoking Activist Earns National Acclaim

The staff at Rick Hendrick Durham Auto Mall -- a strong promoter and supporter of positive community causes and citizens -- congratulates local teen Chad Bullock for being a finalist for the "Do Something" Award to be presented at this weekend's Teen Choice Awards.

The Teen Choice Awards are voted on by teens for their favorite celebrities in movies, music, sports and TV. The 2008 show will be taped Sunday in Los Angeles and televised Monday at 8 p.m. on Fox.

Bullock, 19, one of nine finalists for the "Do Something" Award, will attend the awards show. The winner of his category will be decided by online voting, which ends Friday, and announced on Sunday.

The "Do Something" Award honors a young person who is making a difference in not only his or her own community, but also the world.

The "Do Something" winner will receive $100,000. Each of the nine finalists has received $10,000.

After losing his great-grandfather to lung cancer a few years ago, Bullock, a Durham native, became an anti-tobacco activist and consultant for youth advocacy and tobacco prevention. He has trained 15,000 teens nationwide in developing an action plan, and he has led activists to make the Durham Bulls Athletic Park smoke-free.

Bullock spearheaded a recent project to get Golden Corral, a national restaurant chain headquartered in Raleigh, to go smoke-free. He also has been working to get the campus of Durham Technical Community College smoke-free.
