Extended Service Agreements from Consumer Reports vs. Hendrick Autoguard

Although some people may think otherwise, buying an extended service agreement from a car dealership for a newly purchased vehicle can be a very good idea. Not all warranties are junk.

The Hendrick Autoguard product line is superior to virtually all other extended warranties and well worth the investment. It is designed to save the consumer, not cost the consumer.

A recent article in Consumer Reports claimed that extended service agreements -- commonly called extended warranties -- are a rip-off and a "high-priced gamble." Hendrick Durham Auto Mall is no small operation with a warranty designed to take consumers' money. We are a well-known brand name -- perhaps the best-known name in the automotive industry - and our warranties really are designed to save our consumers money.

Consumers at other dealerships may find that the warranties cover the wrong items. Many warranties cover only a vehicle's "powertrain" items (engine and transmission) or other items that already are being covered by the manufacturer. Hendrick Durham Auto Mall, like the other 60-plus dealerships that make up the Hendrick Automotive Group, offers a unique, comprehensive extended service agreement called Hendrick Autoguard. What sets this product apart from others is its comprehensive nature and its coverage of the items most likely to require maintenance or repair.

Hendrick Autoguard is the most extensive warranty available and covers much more than a manufacturer’s warranty covers. It protects against unexpected repairs to almost every component on the vehicle: engine, transmission, front and rear-wheel drive, steering, suspension, brakes, and electronic "high-tech" components like cruise control, electrical switches, power door locks and mirrors, CD players, wiper motors -- the list goes on and on (go to http://www.hendrickauto.com/).

Hendrick Autoguard also covers seals and gaskets, which are NOT covered by the manufacturer’s warranty. Hendrick Autoguard even provides for substitute transportation should your vehicle become disabled.

When the motor that drives a vehicle's anti-lock brakes goes out, the cost of repair can be $650. Should the main switch in the power windows go out, that can be another $400 to repair. Those two items alone would have paid for the warranty.

Among the No. 1 items to go out on a vehicle is an air condition compressor. An A/C compressor costs $1,300 to repair -- more than the cost of an extended service agreement.

Granted, warranties don’t pay off if nothing fails -- just like auto insurance or health insurance. But that’s why people buy insurance -- to be covered in the unexpected loss of auto, home or good health, to have peace of mind.

Consumer Reports claimed in its article that there was an average net loss of $300 to a purchaser of an extended warranty, adding that "odds are, what’s covered (by an extended service agreement) won’t fail." Well, it’s all about the odds: When basketball fans wager on the No. 1-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels to win the NCAA Championship, they are betting on the odds. But, for whatever reason, Carolina may not perform as it is expected to and could lose -- and people will lose money with no coverage for such a breakdown.

Even the Chicago Bulls --perhaps the best-tuned, highest-performing basketball team of the last few decades -- lost with Michael Jordan at the helm. So, too, can the main switch of a motor vehicle’s power windows go out.

Automobiles, like the Tar Heels, are not supposed to break down. But many of them have "high-tech" components that can succumb to wear and tear. Be it a home appliance, a laptop computer or a high-dollar audio system, all possess certain components that are subject to failure.

What is the market value of peace of mind? If someone buys a $20,000-$25,000 vehicle, isn’t $300 a small price to pay for peace of mind? Furthermore, $1,000 equates to only about $20 a month --less than $1 a day.

It’s simple: without warranty, you could be out $6,000 for a major unexpected repair. With warranty, you may pay only $1,000. You do the math.

The purchase of a new vehicle is an important investment. Like any investment, it should be protected. Regular maintenance helps prolong its life, and professional, reasonably-priced maintenance plans are a good idea.

Hendrick Autoguard, Inc. assures you peace of mind and protects your new investment with the most comprehensive extended service contract available. You owe it to yourself to at least listen to the presentation, educate yourself on what items are covered and how our warranty differs from others, and then make your own decision based on whatever value you give to the Hendrick Autoguard.

Make up your own mind. Don't let Consumer Reports make it up for you.

"Zero Percent" sale - all new Tahoes, Suburbans, Silverados and Impalas!

March can not get any madder here in North Carolina's Triangle region now that Hendrick Durham Auto Mall has announced its big "Zero Percent" sale - all new Tahoes, Suburbans, Silverados and Impalas are available at zero percent financing for 60 months from now until the end of the month.
March Madness is a phrase generally reserved for season-ending basketball tournaments. But, hearkening back to the memorable championship run many years ago by tiny Alden-Hebron High School in Illinois -- a team that proved instrumental in creating the "March Madness" trademark and phenomenon -- Hendrick Durham Auto Mall is bringing March Madness into its showroom as it continues its surge to the top of the local automotive industry.
Although many followers of basketball think Brent Musburger coined the phrase March Madness, when he first mentioned it during CBS Sports coverage of the 1982 NCAA Tournament, the phrase was born more than 50 years earlier in Illinois at a tournament sponsored by the Illinois High School Association. What began as a small invitational event in 1908 had grown into a statewide phenomenon by the late 1930s, when more than 900 high-school teams competed against each other in the same tournament. It made for some remarkable matchups and memories, as well as some inspiring performances, and laid the foundation for today's March Madness.

The one champion perhaps still remembered the most was tiny Alden-Hebron High -- a school of only 98 students, just 42 boys -- which won the Illinois state high-school tournament in 1952 led by identical twins Phil and Paul Judson and a 6-10, 200-pound center named Bill Schulz, who had never seen a basketball game until he entered Alden-Hebron as an eighth-grader. A book entitled "Once There Were Giants" details the improbable journey of the Alden-Hebron Green Giants as they won the ’52 state championship over powerful Quincy, which had a student body of 1,035 in just three grades -- marking the first Illinois high-school title game to go to overtime and the first to be televised.
The Illinois High School Association since has received trademark status for the phrase "March Madness" and has registered the trademark "America's Original March Madness." The spirit of March Madness subsequently has spread from coast to coast, and perhaps nowhere is basketball fever more evident than here in North Carolina. So it seems only fitting that Hendrick Durham Auto Mall jump on that theme and generate a car-buying fever to coincide with the basketball fever that always sweeps across Tobacco Road this time of year. In the process, the dealership plans to enjoy a memorable March of success that -- just as happened with the Green Giants of 1952 -- could make the dealership the focus of conversation for years to come.
Unlike Alden-Hebron's victory, a winning March at Hendrick Durham Auto Mall would not be an upset for a dealership that has been Durham's premier dealership for the past 10 years. Utilizing creative sales and marketing techniques, a wealth of professional sales and management experience and a great product line, the dealership already has established itself as one of the best in a disrict that includes much larger dealerships in nearby cities Raleigh, Chapel Hill and even Greensboro. Last month, Hendrick Durham Auto Mall out-performed all but one other dealership in the district, several of which were much larger in size, staff and inventory.
Like Alden-Hebron's coach in 1952, Russ Ahearn, Rick Hendrick has developed a culture that is obsessed with victory. Just as the victorious champions of March Madness hang banners commemorating their accomplishments, so, too, does Rick Hendrick Chevrolet hang banners that serve as a daily reminder of the dealerships keys to success.
  • Teamwork Through Trust and Respect
  • Integrity
  • Commitment to Customer Enthusiasm
  • Passion For Winning
  • Accountability At All Levels
  • Commitment to Continuous Improvement

"We do not want to be the biggest," said Hendrick, who owns more than 60 dealerships nationwide, "but the best."

In addition to its low prices and aggressive dealmaking, Hendrick Durham Auto Mall also ranks at the top of the district in CSI - a customer satisfaction index by which General Motors grades the dealership and that considers "complete" customer satisfaction the only passing score.
There's quite a fan base of support for NCAA-style March Madness. The fan base continues to grow at Hendrick Durham Auto Mall, which is, like little Alden-Hebron, not the biggest team in the game but fast becoming the best.
So come on down for the "Zero Percent" sale and ride in style to the basketball tournament of your choice.
