Mears Leaving Hendrick Motorsports

LOUDON, N.H. - According to published reports, NASCAR driver Casey Mears will leave Hendrick Motorsports at the end of this season.

His replacement in the No. 5 Chevrolet Impala is expected to be stock-car veteran Mark Martin. An official announcement from the Hendrick team regarding Mears' replacement has not yet been made.

Martin has been running a part-time schedule this year for Dale Earnhardt, Inc.

Mears has been with the Hendrick team since 2007. He moved from the No. 25 Chevrolet into the No. 5 after Kyle Busch left following last season.

"We've put a ton of emphasis on the No. 5 program," team owner Rick Hendrick said in a news release. "It's been a total team effort, and Casey has worked as hard as anyone to help us improve. We've tested more than we ever have, but the results just haven't come.

"None of us, Casey included, has been satisfied with the situation this season. But he's confident there are other options out there for him in 2009, and we feel like Hendrick Motorsports will have some opportunities, too."

The Hendrick team is one of the most powerful in NASCAR's Sprint Cup Series, having won numerous championships -- including the last two in a row won by Jimmie Johnson. But Mears has only one victory since joining the team, and his performances reportedly have not met expectations.

Entering Sunday's race at New Hampshire International Speedway, Mears ranks 24th in the season point standings and has only three top-10 finishes in 16 races.

Teammates Jeff Gordon, Dale Earnhardt, Jr., and Johnson all are in the top seven in points.

"I've never put more energy into racing (than this season)," Mears said. "But, for whatever reason, we just haven't been able to make it click. It's certainly not for lack of dedication on anyone's part."

Mears moved out of the No. 25 car, which became Earnhardt's No. 88, into the same car in which Busch had a victory and 20 top-10 finishes last season en route to finishing fifth in points. Busch was dropped from the Hendrick team to make room for Earnhardt, Jr.

Busch, meanwhile, has been the Sprint Cup series' hottest driver this season, having won five times for Joe Gibbs Racing and leading the points race.

Asked Friday about Mears being released, Busch said: "It's tough. That team may be expected to run somewhat what we ran last year. Hopefully, Casey can find another deal."

Tonight's Moon: Large June Illusion

Business usually is brisk at Hendrick Durham Auto Mall when there is a full moon in the sky. There may be no exception to that tonight, when the moon will be extraordinary.

Not only is tonight the "solstice moon," coming two days before summer starts in the Northern Hemisphere, but it also will present an amazing June moon illusion.

As the moon rises in the sky tonight, it may look unusually large. But it will be just an illusion, a well-documented occurrence particularly noticeable with the solstice moon.

According to NASA, the reason for the illusion lies in lunar mechanics: The sun and full moon are like kids on a see-saw; when one is high, the other is low. This week's high solstice sun gives us a low, horizon-hugging moon and a strong, long-lasting version of the illusion.

Here's how it works, according to NASA: Your mind believes objects on the horizon are farther away than things overhead because you are used to seeing clouds just a few miles above. But the clouds on the horizon can indeed be hundreds of miles away. So if we think something (such as the moon) is farther away, and it's not, then it seems larger.

Perhaps the guests at Rick Hendrick Chevrolet won't see the moon because they will be too busy perusing the inventory and staring with amazement at the incredibly low prices and great deals being written up by the managers. The way the day has gone, that could well happen: we had our first customer signed and delivered hours before lunchtime.

Celebrity Sighting At RHC of Durham

Among the visitors to the Hendrick Durham Auto Mall showroom this week was former University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and professional basketball player Bill Chamberlain.

Chamberlain, who played for Dean Smith at UNC in the 1970's, purchased a preowned Tahoe.

Chamberlain played for the Phoenix Suns from 1973-74.

RHC's Incentives Make News

Hendrick Durham Auto Mall was featured on the local news this week for the way it has been able to attract customers in the face of a seemingly slow economy and soaring gas prices.

General Manager Doug Harbison was interviewed Monday on WRAL-TV, the local CBS affiliate in Raleigh.

The downtown dealership is offering rebates of up to $9,000 on certain vehicles. The incentives seem to be working as the dealership continues to bring buyers into its showroom.

"You can either take it all at once," Harbison said of the rebate, "or you can take it over a term period, with gas being at a reduced rate."

Although sales are slow, Harbison said people continue to buy SUVs because the price is right.

In fact, just Monday, the dealership sold an Avalanche to a customer from Connecticut, who said she found no better deal in the entire Southeast than the one she got in Durham

Click here for the complete interview and news story as it appeared on the air.

14 Years Ago Today: Police Pursue O.J.

Speaking of SUVs, perhaps the most famous SUV in history made its national on-air debut on this date in history.

On June 17, 1994, police followed a white Ford Bronco registered to O.J. Simpson during a slow-speed pursuit on the L.A. Freeway. Al Cowling, Simpson's friend and former Buffalo Bills teammate, drove the SUV as Simpson sat in the back with a gun, money and a disguise. Simpson -- suspected of killing his wife, Nicole, and another man -- was arrested a short time later. He was acquitted of the two murders in 1995.

Another Positive Day For Hendrick

Sunday was a good day to be associated with Rick Hendrick.

NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt, Jr., was able to get his first points victory as a member of Hendrick's team. A short time later, representatives of Hendrick Durham Auto Mall received applause for their partnership with North Durham Little League.

Sales consultant Paul Ensslin and sales manager Jamar Brinkley presented North Durham Little League with a check for $500 during the league's spring-season closing ceremonies. The dealership had partnerted with the league as part of the national Chevy Youth Baseball Program.

Hundreds of Little-Leaguers and their families braved 90-degree temperature to enjoy a day full of festivities and free hot dogs for the fathers in the crowd. The highlight of the day may have been the Diamondbacks' come-from-behind victory over the Dodgers in the championship game of the AA Minor League, for players ages 8 and 9.

The Diamondbacks closed the season with 15 straight victories.

Garnering almost as much excitement as that comeback victory was the check presentation. The ceremony epitomized Rick Hendrick's and the dealership's commitment to supporting and promoting positive aspects and projects of the communities within which they work.

It marked the second straight Sunday the dealership had participated in a community event. General Manager Doug Harbison and other employees served lunch during the final day of the Habitat for Humanity Home Blitz.

Meanwhile, Earnhardt, Jr., celebrated a victory that seemed a very long time in coming. He had not won in almost 80 races prior to Sunday, not since 2006.

As NASCAR's most popular driver and the newest member of the Hendrick Motorsports team, Junior was ready to live up to expectations. Coasting to the finish line under caution, riding on nothing more than fumes, he gave the masses a day to remember.

Weekend Of Significance At RHC

This weekend is shaping up to be a busy weekend at Hendrick Durham Auto Mall. Zero-percent financing on select vehicles, rebates as large as $6,000 and our sales managers' aggressive attitude about making deals should attract a large crowd to the downtown dealership.

The month of June, especially the next few days, has historical significance for several reasons -- whether it involves climbing the highest mountain, creating a working computer or designing the symbol of American freedom. Hendrick Durham Auto Mall would like to add to that history with its own significant June success.

If you come down here ready to buy, the odds are in your favor that you'll leave here with a new vehicle. You'll also enjoy a pleasant experience in a diverse and friendly atmosphere.

As a host of nations competes on the soccer pitch overseas in the prestigious Euro 2008 tournament, we also can offer you a friendly international experience. Sales personnel from across the globe -- Ghana, Senegal, the Dominican Republic -- are ready to offer you a firm handshake, sound advice and a friendly smile. Come be a part of the festivities.

If you think it would be harder to climb the Denali than buy a Denali, then you have not been to this dealership. We beat the odds by selling two Denalis in the past week.

Interestingly, it was in June that the first ascent of the main summit of Mt. McKinley, also known as the Denali (the "High One"), took place.

Located in Alaska, Mt. McKinley is the highest peak in North America. At a height of approximately 20,320 feet, it stands as the centerpiece of Denali National Park.

The first ascent of the mountain's main summit came on June 7, 1913, by a party led by Hudson Stuck.

Other historic events in this week of June:

June 13, 1967: President Lyndon Johnson appointed U.S. Court of Appeals Judge Thurgood Marshall to fill the seat of retiring Supreme Court Associate Justice Tom C. Clark. Marshall became the first African American in history to sit on America's highest court.

June 14, 1777: The Continental Congress approved the design of a national flag. The flag of the 13 United States would be 13 stripes, alternate red and white, that the Union be thirteen stars, white on a blue field, representing a new constellation.

June 14, 1775: The United States Army was founded.

June 14, 1951: The first commercial computer, Univac I, was unveiled.

June 15, 1923: Lou Gehrig made his New York Yankee debut as a pinch runner.

June 15, 1752: Benjamin Franklin, flying a kite in a thunderstorm, proved that lightning is electricity.

The staff at Hendrick Durham Auto Mall is ready to add to the history. We invite you to come be a part of the excitement. You'll be happy you did.

Inspiration From The Duke, Teamwork

The slogan for June, printed on a calendar at Hendrick Durham Auto Mall, is simple yet strong.

"Together, ordinary people can achieve extraordinary results."

Combining the phrase with the memory of John Wayne, an ordinary man who became an extraordinary cultural icon, can help inspire us all as we face the challenges of the coming month. This is the 29th anniversary of Wayne's death (see below).

The phrase on the calendar would be relevant any month. It is a philosophy shared by the employees at Rick Hendrick Chevrolet, where extraordinary things happen on a daily basis.

Extraordinary prices. Extraordinary deals. Extraordinary savings. You get them all when you come visit us.

June 11, 1979: John Wayne Dies

On this day in 1979, John Wayne, an American film actor famous for starring in westerns, died at age 72 after battling cancer for more than a decade.

Some people, including at least one sales manager at Hendrick Durham Auto Mall, believe that another actor, Clint Eastwood, surpassed Wayne as a symbol of rugged masculinity -- the man's man. But what those people may not know is that Wayne received the two highest civilian decorations awarded by the United States government for his status as the American male.

Originally named Marion Morrision, Wayne's first acting jobs were bit parts in which he was credited as Duke Morrison, a childhood nickname derived from the name of his beloved pet dog.

Wayne's first starring role came in 1930 with The Big Trail, a film directed by college friend Raoul Walsh. It was during this time that Marion Morrison became "John Wayne" -- director Walsh did not think Marion was a good name for an actor playing a tough western hero.

In 1939, Wayne finally had his breakthrough when friend John Ford -- who directed Wayne in several movies -- cast him as Ringo Kid in the Oscar-winning Stagecoach.

Wayne went on to play larger-than-life heroes in dozens of movies and came to symbolize a type of rugged, strong, straight-shooting American man.

Ford directed Wayne in some of his best-known films, including Fort Apache (1948), She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949), Rio Grande (1950), The Quiet Man (1952) and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence (1962).

Wayne was known off-screen for his patriotic, conservative leanings. He produced, directed and starred in The Alamo (1960) and The Green Berets (1968), both of which reflected his political views. In 1969, he won an Oscar for his role as a drunken, one-eyed federal marshal named Rooster Cogburn in True Grit.

Wayne's last film was The Shootist (1976) in which he played a legendary gunslinger dying of cancer. The role had particular meaning; the actor was fighting the disease in real life.

Wayne's status as an iconic American was formally recognized by the U.S. Congress on May 26, 1979, when he was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal. The medal, crafted by the United States Mint, has an image of Wayne riding on horseback on one side, and the other side has a portrait of Wayne with the words: "John Wayne, American."

On June 9, 1980, Wayne was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Jimmy Carter. Wayne made a speech at Carter's inaugural ball in which he described himself as "a member of the loyal opposition."

ACC Now Baseball Conference?

Harper Ensslin, 11-year-old son of Hendrick Durham Auto Mall sales consultant Paul Ensslin, has a sports blog. To see his work, Click Here.

The Atlantic Coast Conference long has been considered a basketball conference, based on the league's perennially high power rating in that sport and the fact that each of the Triangle teams (North Carolina, Duke, N.C. State) has won at least two national basketball championships.

Well, perhaps now the ACC should be considered a baseball league. For the second time in three years, at least three league teams will be competing in the eight-team College World Series.

UNC, Florida State and Miami will represent the ACC in Omaha, Neb., beginning next weekend. No other league in the country has three teams in the double-elimination event.

In 2006, the ACC had four teams in the CWS, including Carolina -- which has advanced to the College World Series for three years in a row. The Tar Heels finished as runners-up in 2006 and 2007.

The N.C. State Wolfpack nearly gave the ACC four teams in the CWS this year. The Wolfpack fell one victory short, losing to Georgia in the best-of-three Super Regionals in Athens, Ga.

UNC will become only the second team in ACC history to participate in the CWS three straight seasons. Florida State did it twice, 1994-1996 and 1998-2000.

Carolina, Miami and FSU are among the top four seeds in the national tournament. Expectations are that one of those teams will give the ACC its first NCAA baseball championship in more than 50 years. Between them, they have posted a combined record of 157-33 (Miami 52-9, UNC 51-12, FSU 54-12).

Unless they have to play each other, the teams should do well in Omaha -- Half of the Seminoles' losses this season came against ACC competition, while Miami lost five ACC games, and Carolina lost seven ACC games. FSU split four games against UNC and lost two of three to Miami, while UNC was 2-1 against the Hurricanes.

Hendrick Durham Auto Mall would like to wish all the teams well as they look to represent the league well and give ACC fans much more to talk about this summer than the next basketball season.

RHC, Local Habitat Join Forces In 'Home Blitz'

Hendrick Durham Auto Mall
was a big part of a big event Saturday, showing that community affairs are as important to the dealership as selling vehicles.

General Manager Doug Harbison as well as several other managers and employees participated in the final day of Habitat for Humanity's national week-long Home Blitz. They provided food and drinks and served lunch Saturday to the many local volunteers and other participants who braved scorching temperatures to build homes for several fortunate families.

Habitat of Durham joined with partners in Orange, Durham and Chatham Counties to build 10 homes in just five days across the three counties.

The blitz began on May 31, 2008 and ended Saturday at Hope Crossing in East Durham with a dedication ceremony that included a new community garden and playground.

Saturday's event epitomized our dealership's commitment to promoting and supporting our community.

The day was not about money or business. It was about seeing smiles on people's faces and the satisfaction of changing lives.

The national week-long blitz was the largest Habitat project of its kind and gave many low-income families the opportunity for homeownership in communities across the nation. All homes were completed from start to finish in one week.

The final home to be completed in Durham marked Habitat of Durham's 200th home.

Good News For June: Zero Percent Financing

At Hendrick Durham Auto Mall, we know that people may not want to come out on a 100-degree day just to spend money.

But what if you could come out and save money?

That is exactly what will happen when you come down to our downtown dealership this month. Our managers, in conjunction with General Motors, have announced strong incentives to not only buy, but also buy vehicles that get exceptional gas mileage.

Not only can you save on the cost of the vehicle and the financing, if you choose, you also can reduce the money you spend on gas.

Hendrick Durham Auto Mall is offering 0 percent financing for 60 months -- that's right, 0 percent financing for 60 months -- on four products that can get more than 30 miles per gallon of gas. Furthermore, the 2008 HHR, 2008 Cobalt, 2008 Impala and 2008 Equinox can be yours for as low as $199 per month.

In addition to the special financing, we also are offering aggressive rebates of up to $5,000 on select vehicles. There's no better time to buy.

As we all watch and listen to the reports of seemingly endless scorching temperatures, a large wildfire that is threatening homes and forcing evacuations in three N.C. counties and ever-rising gas prices, we all could use some good news. Well, consider this your good news:

Say it all together now: "Zero percent financing for 60 months on HHRs, Cobalts, Impalas and Equinoxes." That's good news, indeed.

We also have a comfortable, air-conditioned showroom and a variety of refreshments -- anything to help your visit here be as pleasnt and worthwhile as possible.

Come on down to 409 S. Roxboro Street, just down from the Durham Bulls Athletic Park and American Tobacco complex, and see for yourself.

Forty Years Years Ago Today: Who Shot RFK?

As Sen. Ted Kennedy of Masschusetts recuperates today at Duke University Medical Center here in Durham following surgery to remove a cancerous brain tumor, he can remember back to this day 40 years ago -- one of the most famous days in U.S. history.

Kennedy's brother, Robert, was fatally shot as he prepared to make a speech after winning the California Democratic primary on June 5, 1968. He died the next day.

Interestingly enough, tne man found guilty of RFK's assassination, pakistanian Sirhan Sirhan, said he has no recollection of the event. Even today, 40 years later, he maintains his innocence and ignorance about his alleged actions.

Today, Sirhan is America's last surviving political assassin, locked away in Corcoran prison. Since 9-11, he has been cast as the first Arab terrorist. Some leading psychiatrists believe he was a "Manchurian Candidate," hypnotically programmed to kill RFK.

For 40 years, there has been debate about what really happened that day at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles, about who really killed RFK and whether or not Sirhan acted alone. We may never know. But undoubtedly, that vigorous dicussion will be renewed today as America recognizes the 40th anniversary of that shooting.

Ford's Famous First Ride

Many people know that Henry Ford's introduction of the Model T automobile in the early 1900's revolutionized transportation and American industry.

What many may not know is that on this date in history, June 4, 1896, Ford test-drove his first car.

If you come visit Hendrick Durham Auto Mall and check out our new accessories display, you might be amazed at how well and how inexpensively you can accessorize your vehicle -- from wheels, to satellite radio, to floor mats and custom consoles. You also might be struck by just how far motor vehicles and the automotive industry have evolved since that summer day in Detroit 112 years ago.

Ford's vehicle that day was quite plain and primitive by today's standards. Known as the Quadricycle, it essentially was nothing more than a frame fitted with four bicycle wheels and was powered by a small, one-cylinder internal-combustion engine that Ford had constructed on his kitchen table.

The Quadricycle was not the first working motor vehicle in history -- coming 10 years after Carl Benz had patented the first gasoline automobile in Germany, three years after the Duryae Brothers' first automobile and three months after Charles King became the first driver of a gasoline automobile in Detroit. But it made for a milestone moment nonetheless.

Although the vehicle stalled from ignition trouble after running successfully for only a few blocks, Ford reportedly could not have been more overjoyed. That short ride laid the foundation for the Model T, which is generally regarded as the first affordable automobile -- the car that "put America on wheels."

Now, here we are, 112 years later. Vehicles come in all shapes and sizes. They have air-conditioning, power locks and windows. They are built in huge, expensive factories by a very large workforce. There also are accessories galore: 22-inch rims, running boards, billet grilles, remote starting systems, just to name a few.

There's also been a move by many people back toward the 1-cylinder engine as gas prices rise toward the $4-per-gallon mark. None are built on kitchen tables or backyard workshops, but the fruit of Ford's labor is evident.

RHC Recognizes Historic Day For Space Program

Tuesday marks a special day as Hendrick Durham Auto Mall recognizes the U.S. space program and its advancements over the last 43 years.

Shuttle Discovery's astronauts performed the first spacewalk of their latest mission Tuesday, the same date on which NASA astronaut Ed White became the first American to walk in space -- during one of the most memorable moments in U.S. history.

Hendrick Durham Auto Mall, located at 409 S. Roxboro Street, just a couple of blocks from the Durham Bulls Athletic Park, would like to honor the occasion with "out-of-this-world" deals on virtually all of its in-stock vehicles. With new rebates just announced from General Motors and aggressive action by the sales managers to start June with a roar, the time is right to purchase a vehicle.

White made history on June 3, 1965, when he floated out of the hatch of his Gemini 4 capsule and floated in space at the end of a 25-foot cord for approximately 25 minutes. Millions of people throughout the world looked on and listened in awe as White described his view of the Earth below him.

He initially used a gas-powered gun held in his hand to maneuver. After the first three minutes, the fuel ran out, and White moved around by twisting his body and pulling on the cord.

"This is the greatest experience," White said.

When the time came for him to climb back into the capsule, White called it "the saddest moment" of his life.

Heightened by the prospect of White's "extravehicular activity" (EVA), and the first use of the new Mission Control Center in Houston, interest in Gemini IV reached levels never again matched in the U.S. space program.

Fast forward 43 years to today, June 3, 2008, and another mission was taking place - the installation of a giant Japanese lab to the international Discovery space station.

Discovery's designated spacewalkers, Michael Fossum and Ronald Garan, Jr., will prep the $1 billion lab, named Kibo (Japanese for hope), for installation. Later in the day, astronauts working from inside will use a robot arm to lift the 37-foot long lab from the shuttle and anchor it to the station.

The space station and today's mission are further testament to the importance and historical impact of White's walk. Without that walk, space still might be considered the final frontier.

As the Discovery crew does its own space walk and space work today, Hendrick Durham Auto Mall invites you to come honor and share in the U.S. space achievements to date and the many more to come.

GM Volt Coming Soon

According to General Motors CEO Rick Wagoner, the GM board has approved production of a new small Chevrolet car at a plant in Lordstown, Ohio, in mid-2010 and the Chevy Volt electric vehicle in Detroit.

Wagoner said the company plans to bring the Volt -- a plug-in electric car -- to showrooms by the end of 2010. The Volt runs on an electric motor and has a small engine to recharge its batteries.
